| Hi! If you're here, then you're probably pretty new to either chat in general, or this site in particular. Or, perhaps, simply the concept of HTML chat rooms. Here's a quick tutorial on how to use The Pork's chat rooms.
First, find a chat room that has chatters in it. The list of rooms is located at http://www3.the-pork.com/chat/.
The number beside each room tells you how many people are chatting in there.
Once you've clicked on a room, you'll see what might seem (at first) a confusing set-up. But don't worry, it's easy to figure out.
The first thing you want to focus on is how to see messages, and how to send messages to the people in the room. One button does both of those things.
The buttom marked "Speak/Update" will not only send any message that you've typed into the large text field (located directly above it), but will 'refresh' the room so you can see all the new messages that have been posted.
Messages are listed in the room from newest to oldest. That means that the messages at the top are the ones that have been sent by people most recently. This may seem counter-intuitive, but it keeps you from having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see new messages constantly.
To send a message, all you do is type your message into the text field (located directly above the Speak/Update button), and then click the "Send/Update" button. It will post your message to the room, and everyone will be able to see it.
Again, to "listen" to the room and see if anyone responds to you, click the "Speak/Update" button and read the new messages. Don't worry if not everyone says hello right away! You'll just have to win them over with your wonderful chat personality.
If you would like to send a private message to someone, simply click on the "To:" drop down message box, and highlight that user's name. Then, the next time you type a message and click the "Speak/Update" button, the message will go right to them, and no one else. On your screen, the message will show up as a different color than the others.
There are plenty of other perks and features at The Pork, including Pager features, icons, and pic posts, but that should at least get you started!-CM
