| Tell USDA: Stop Allowing the Torture of Downed Cows to Feed Our Schoolchildren
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080217/ap_on_bi_ge/slaughterhouse_abuse
HSUS Undercover investigation and video footage surfaces:
An investigation by The Humane Society of the United States at a cattle slaughterhouse has led to the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Our investigation documented that animals too sick or injured to stand or walk—called "downers" by industry—have been kicked, beaten, dragged with chains, shocked with electric prods, sprayed in the face with hoses and pushed by forklifts in efforts to get them to their feet to pass USDA inspection.
This unacceptable cruelty potentially puts the food supply at risk—at least 12 of the 15 identified cases of mad cow disease in North America to date have reportedly been downers.
In spite of claims that downers were being eliminated from the food supply, downed animals may be falling through the cracks as a result of poor oversight, anemic enforcement, and a loophole created by inconsistent agency regulations. The result is a losing proposition for animals who are beaten, kicked, and dragged to their death and consumers who unknowingly consume the meat from sick and injured animals.
Warning: Our video of the cruelty is very difficult to watch. Even worse is the thought that an outfit like Hallmark Meat Packing Company got away with this kind of abuse every day, without proper oversight from the USDA.

HSUS prompt:
Dragging cows too weak to stand. Shocking them with electric prods when they can't walk. Ramming them with forklifts. Even forcing water down their throats -- right out of the manual on waterboarding.
Our shocking undercover investigation revealed these and other abuses of "downed" dairy cows -- those who are too sick or injured to walk -- at a Southern California slaughter plant. And The Humane Society of the United States’ investigation also discovered that the meat from these tortured animals gets fed to children through the National School Lunch Program!

| | | | | They showed some clips on the news without a warning before hand. I literally had nightmares. One of the clips was of a cow being pushed with a forklift. When the forklift was out of the way, you could see the cow's hind legs were buckled at the "knee" and the lower end of the legs was below the belly as it was trying to walk. I hope they hang those people.
