those of you that do icons, what is your preferred method for clarifying images after you've shrunk them down to icon size?

i use PSP8, and resize using smart size. then i use the soften brush (set at a very low opacity, 25 or so) to lightly go over the overly pixelated areas, use the JPEG artifact removal (Adjust -> Add/Remove Noise -> JPEG Artifact Removal.. strength set to low, crispness to 2), and finally i sharpen the image (Adjust -> Sharpness -> Sharpen).

when i'm finished i save using the JPEG optimizer.

i was just curious to know if there are other methods that work better for others, seeing some of the blanks on the boards being so crisp and clear makes me envious. -l- (and Savage, i'm lookin' Your way in particular!)

~smiles at the lovely alurra. I normally use DCE Tools auto enhance filter, it basically does what you just described, sharpens, removes noise, but also enhances colors and clarifies skin tones, and it is adjustable on each feature. I find I get more control over the sharpening this way than when I use the sharpen feature in Corel 10, it seems to over sharpen at times. Also, I rarely use soften unless I have removed a background, then I might soften around the edges if it pixelates. allura, I have always found your cuts to be very beautiful and your work amazing, so what you are doing works well, but if you want to try DCE, I can get you a link to that filter. I also always save with the JPEG optimizer. ~hugs you and wanders

-ss- well thank You for the kind words Savage, and for responding. i've never heard of that filter, but as You say, it sounds as if it basically does the same thing. so i guess i'll keep doing what i've been doing. -s-

is that filter PSP compatible? -curious-

I rarely clarify beyond sharpening and softening as I prefer images to look natural but I may sharpen/soften via the adjust tool rather than from the adjustment menu

I am sorry alurra, I didn't notice your question. Yes DCE is PSP compatible. ~S

~smiles at liri, beautifier is another of My all time favorite filters! I will see if I can find a link to DCE, I think it is a professional filter now, but will see what I can find. ~S

Try a defog/USM at 20-60-0. I have actions set up to do all this in photoshop CS3. I think its best to pick quality images first and do any processing work before resizing. If you notice jpeg artifacts or pixelation then you have probably over processed the image and nothing is going to help with that but starting over.
